Incorrect usage of dry powder inhalers might have a major influence on the clinical effectiveness of the delivered drug. The technical features of inhaler devices have improved constantly with time. However, the effectiveness in delivering drugs to the lungs depends on correctly performed inhalation maneuvers.

The most critical mistakes made by the patients using DPIs are not exhaling out before inhaling, inhaling slowly instead of deep and quick and not holding the breath for 10 seconds. Another common mistake observed among patients using dry powder inhalers are not holding the device correctly and breathing out into the device thereby affecting the medicine efficiency.

Dry powder inhaler though simple to use, have its own disadvantages. One of the most important factors for the correct use of DPIs is the generation of a forceful and deep inhalation through the device. However, many patients are unable to generate sufficient inspiratory airflow to use their DPIs correctly.

Inability of patients to correctly use their DPI device may be a direct consequence of insufficient or poor inhaler technique instruction. Training apparently results in a more efficient use of established DPIs, but these training sessions must be repeated, and the results checked at regular intervals.

Here is the demo video of an interactive educational tool that provides real time step by step demonstration for the patients to learn and understand the correct steps of using Diskus inhaler, allows patients to practice multiple times at their own speed with the instructor, and gives clear visual feedback on patient’s performance thereby improving patient’s inhaler technique.
